Realm Interactive licensed TradeWars in 2000 and developed TradeWars: Dark Millennium until 2002 when the company was purchased by Richard Garriott's Destination Games/NCsoft Austin. Soon after, the TradeWars name was dropped, and the game became Exarch. Eventually, Exarch development was discontinued, with the team splitting up and moving on to other NCsoft projects, including Tabula Rasa which was being revamped after two years of development. The game was eventually picked back up (in 2005) and completed as Dungeon Runners, though by an entirely different group of developers. Dungeon Runners used the engine originally written for TW:DM by David Adams, as well as assets from earlier phases of the project, with additional new assets based on the concepts of Joe Madureira and others.
