Bernd Lehahn contacted John Pritchett in February of 1999, prior to the completion of Egosoft's space simulation game, X-Beyond the Frontier. According to Lehahn, the designers of the game
"had a discussion about if we should allow players to extend their ships cargo hold last week, and I
brought up that I remember playing a game called Tradewars many many years ago. So I downloaded the TWGS
program from your website and installed it here to look at the game again. By now we started playing a game
of Tradewars here on our company LAN :)"
Pritchett provided Egosoft with codes for the game, and the two proceeded to discuss online game design. Lehahn described their plans to create an online, persistent world X game, and expressed his hope that Pritchett might assist in that effort. Pritchett consulted with Egosoft on the project, but declined to join the company at that time.
Later, after Pritchett had spent 5 years developing the flight model for Chris Roberts' game, Star Citizen, he was given another opportunity to join the X team. In 2022, he began development of a prototype flight model for possible inclusion in Egosoft's next X game, X5.
